Switching between the two halves of a longtime on-again, off-again romance, Rooney offers us an intimate study of her two well-drawn protagonists. Totally absorbing, this powerful book is perfect for traveling or a quiet afternoon at home. You will be fully transported into Rooney’s masterful novel, which explores the dynamics and complexities of relationships.

Normal People feels so deeply personal, as all my favorite books do; my heart was on the line the entire time I was reading it. This terrific novel is about communication breakdowns, the insecurities that accompany early love, and the complications of sex and friendship in your early twenties. The relationships between Connell and Marianne will remind you of all you wish you'd done differently in your youth, and the tenderness between them will give you hope. It left me feeling lifted, yet raw, completely opened up to the world and grateful to be alive in it.

— Jess

Sally Rooney is such a joy to read! Both of her excellent novels seem to exist in the same world, the complicated, moody protagonists of Conversations With Friends feel as if they could be friends with the engaging, introspective protagonists of Normal People. While both novels have sparked many discussions (or, dare I say, conversations) with fellow booksellers and friends, I am most likely to revisit Normal People, perhaps only because the intimate portrait of a couple in their mid to late 20s feels more relevant to my life now, whereas reading Conversations With Friends felt like a way to remember the person I once was, when I had an embarrassing youthful superiority. It's hard not to read yourself into Rooney's well drawn, honest characters, and I am looking forward to all the novels to come from this talented new literary voice.
