Staff Reviews

Inspired by a real-life newspaper article, Gaige tells the story of a young father who decides to give up his middle-class life, buy a sailboat and take his family on a long sailing voyage off the coast of Panama. Needless to say, things don't go as planned. Alternating between the wife’s post-voyage narration and the husband’s sailing journal, this is an extremely well-written, utterly gripping story of a family trying to hold it together in the face of crisis. Now in paperback, this was one of my favorite books of 2020.

This is one of my favorite books of 2020. A husband and wife decide to step out of the rat race and take their two small children on a long sailing voyage off the coast of Central America. Needless to say, things don’t go as planned. The writing is fantastic, the characters are all too human (read: flawed but sympathetic) and the story reads like the best kind of thriller.

May 2020 Indie Next List

“Wherever you go, your anxieties go with you — even (or especially) if you go live on a boat to sail the world with your spouse and small children. Nothing will ever be the same for Juliet, Michael, and their family after their harrowing year at sea, and no reader will be the same after reading this taut, brilliant novel. I can’t stop thinking about it.”
