About the Author

Susan Petigru King was born on October 24, 1824 in Charleston, South Carolina. She was educated at Madame Talvande's School for Young Ladies in Charleston and later at Madame Guillon's boarding school in Philadelphia. After her father suffered deep financial losses in the Panic of 1837, King's mother urged her to marry for money. The resulting marriage to Henry C. King was a rocky one that influenced much of her later writing on love and marriage. Her first novel, Busy Moments of an Idle Woman, was published anonymously in 1853. She continued to author books and write stories for publications like Harper's Magazine, Russell's Magazine and the Charleston Daily Courier for the next two decades.
