Pet by Akwaeke Emezi

This original and bold book is for those who, like me, enjoy enigmas and complex questions. The town of Lucille is free of “monsters” (people who exploit others)—or at least that’s what Jam was taught. When a magical creature called Pet appears, Jam learns otherwise: There’s a monster in Lucille, and it’s in her best friend’s house. Impressively combining mystery with ethics, this story will keep you on the edge of your seat and thinking long after the final page. - Stephanie

There Will Come a Darkness by Katy Rose Pool

Fans of Leigh Bardugo and Sarah J. Maas, look no further for your next read: This epic, high-stakes, multiple-narrator fantasy is for you! Ephyra, Beru, Hassan, Anton, and Jude’s lives are all thrown into chaos when an ancient prophecy begins unfolding. Pool’s fantasy world is detailed, distinctive, and immersive—I felt I was there with the characters and I stayed up too late trying to unravel the various enigmas integral to the story. I’m already looking forward to the sequel! - Stephanie

The Fountains of Silence by Ruta Sepetys

As a teenager, historical fiction got me through some rough times. The Fountains of Silence would have been a panacea to my soul. Ana and Daniel come from very different worlds and Daniel’s lack of cultural understanding puts them both at risk. This story is lush and beautiful but exposes the sharp edges of a part of history. By shedding light on the history of fascism in Spain, Sepetys offers a harsh warning to modern readers. - Ivy

Children of Virtue and Vengeance by Tomi Adeyemi

Children of Blood and Bone was one of my favorite fantasy novels of 2018, and I’ve eagerly awaited the sequel from the moment I finished it. Tomi Adeyemi is one of fantasy’s best new voices—the world building and characters are superbly drawn, gorgeously rendered, and very human: Zélie and Amari are brave, charismatic, at times afraid and unsure, but always willing to rise to the challenges thrown their way. I can’t wait to see where they go next! - Stuart
