The Bride Test by Helen Hoang

I love when an author continues to delight. Helen Hoang is that author. The charm and sexiness of her earlier The Kiss Quotient is also in abundance in The Bride Test. Even though I know the book ends in a happily-ever-after (it’s a romance, that’s what they’re supposed to do!), I had no idea how we were going to get there. Hoang handles autism, being an immigrant, and meddling mothers while giving you the steamiest of sexy times and all the feels. - Karena

My Year of Rest and Relaxation by Ottessa Moshfegh

How is this possible? How could a book about a woman who chooses to sleep a whole year away be so engrossing, so propulsive, that I could not put it down. Moshfegh’s narrator follows in the footsteps of The Catcher in the Rye’s Holden Caulfield and The Bell Jar’s Esther Greenwood, skewering the phonies of New York and modern consumer culture armed with nothing but her own apathy and acerbic wit. Well, that and an arsenal of prescription sleep aids.

The Great Believers by Rebecca Makkai

In celebration of its paperback release, I have started and restarted this review many times, as it seems nearly impossible to convey the brilliance and impact of this novel. I can tell you it is my favorite novel in years; I have recommended it to so many, only to have them pass it on. There are throat-caught sentences and marvel when those of us that have read it try to talk about it. The book alternates between two storylines, one following Yale, a young gay man in Chicago in the 1980s at the height of the AIDS crisis; the other following Fiona, 30 years later, a mother in a desperate search to find her missing adult daughter. The intersection of these two stories is nothing short of brilliant. Love, redemption, and life at its fullest are bound in these pages. Read this book. —S.M.C.

There There by Tommy Orange

Believe the hype! This novel is a scorcher. Set around a powwow at the Oakland Coliseum, There There follows a large cast of characters as they navigate their individual experiences as “urban Indians.” With prose that will pound at your heart, Orange brings each character to brutal life and forces readers to confront the darker truths of colonialism’s legacy. Truly a game-changer for American literature.  —Jessica

Varina by Charles Frazier

We are long overdue to have the perspective of women who lived through and impacted important moments in history. Varina, by brilliant Cold Mountain novelist Charles Frazier, aims to give voice to Varina Howell, the wife of Confederate leader Jefferson Davis, during the last days of the Civil War. As we watch her flee both her failing marriage and the bounty on her head, we witness her struggles with complicity and prejudices in the darkest moments in our nation’s history. A great addition to historical fiction.                                          —Casey

My Ex-Life by Stephen McCauley

In this warm, witty novel, two people reconnect 20-plus years after their disastrous, short-lived marriage and rediscover the friendship and parts of themselves they left in their ex-life. I smiled throughout McCauley’s delightfully delivered and always smart story about grabbing onto love with all you’ve got in whatever unlikely, unconventional place you find it. My Ex-Life is the antidote to whatever dreariness ails you.                                                                                  —Clara

Ayesha at Last by Uzma Jalaluddin

Uzma Jalaluddin’s debut novel is billed as a modern-day Muslim Pride and Prejudice, but any Elizabeth-and-Darcy-esque plot points pale in comparison to the real romance and individuals Ayesha at Last finds in the Toronto community. Khalid and Ayesha navigate the myriad definitions of love, faith, friendship, family, marriage, and more in this resonant 21st-century tale, flavored lightly with Indian cooking, spoken-word poetry, and tech-world shenanigans, that does not disappoint in either its characters or its heart.                          —Jocelyn

The Mars Room by Rachel Kushner

On just about every best-of-the-year list in 2018, The Mars Room still never quite got the attention it deserves. Romy—a woman who is serving a life sentence for murder in an all-women’s jail in the Central Valley—tells with total honesty, surprising humor and gritty reality, the fate of women who have never gotten a fair shake in life. Incarceration, abuse, and justice are just a small sample of the important issues addressed in this novel, but it is Romy’s voice and her tenderness that leave you breathless as you witness her plight.                            —Casey

The Book of Essie By Meghan MacLean Weir

I kind of have an obsession with books where a woman is raised in extreme religious families. This fictional tale of a girl raised on TV with her preacher father, machinating mother, and five siblings fit the bill perfectly. I love the way Essie figures out how to escape by  using the rules and restrictions her parents set up against her. It is fantastically written.

A Lucky Man: Stories By Jamel Brinkley

In the nine expansive, searching stories of A Lucky Man—a finalist for the National Book Award—fathers and sons attempt to salvage relationships with friends and family members and confront mistakes made in the past. “With equal parts precision and poetry, these nine audacious stories step into the minefields awaiting boys of color as they approach manhood in Brooklyn and the Bronx—testing the limits of relationships, social norms, and their own definitions of masculinity.”
