Leadership by Doris Kearns Goodwin

When I think of who we need to make sense of the challenges facing our democracy, the preeminent presidential historian Doris Kearns Goodwin is at the top of my list. Chronicling the leadership of her best-studied subjects—Abraham Lincoln, Theodore Roosevelt, Franklin D. Roosevelt, and Lyndon Johnson—Goodwin masterfully details the commonalities that linked their leadership even with their widely differing upbringings and challenges. Ultimately, Goodwin showcases the moral purpose and resilience necessary to shepherd our nation forward. - Casey

Sea Prayer by Khaled Hosseini

Hosseini, beloved author of the The Kite Runner, has helped lead the movement to bring awareness about refugees around the world. Here he has penned a gorgeous and harrowing letter from a father to his child as they wait for a journey across the sea to flee persecution and war. Beautifully illustrated by Dan Williams, Sea Prayer gives poetic voice to a generation of refugees whose sole wish is for their children to find safe passage, able to remember the beauty of their homeland before all was lost. Let us all bear witness through this book. - Casey

The Fifth Risk by Michael Lewis

You may know Michael Lewis from his best-selling books on the insider worlds of baseball (Moneyball), football (The Blind Side), the housing market (The Big Short), and the human psyche (The Undoing Project). Now his journalistic sights are on the US government and the current administration. Shying away from personalities and conspiracies, Lewis focuses on the agencies that make the country function—and exactly how and why they are (or aren’t) working. - Jocelyn

Operation Columba by Gordon Corera

I will read any book about any animal, and while I was somewhat familiar with homing pigeons and the use of them as messengers, this book caught me off guard with its depiction of the amount of work, dedication, and courage put forth by those involved with the pigeons. As with any good hobby, the amount of jealousy and in-fighting involved also have their place in the narrative. The knowledge produced by the pigeons’ efforts is fascinating. Written more for a military history buff than an animal lover, Operation Columba is perfect for history fans who think they’ve read it all. - Rachel

Heirs of the Founders by H.W. Brands

Heirs of the Founders is the perfect sequel to books like Joseph J. Ellis’s Founding Brothers and The Quartet. While none became president, Webster, who could make an opposing Supreme Court justice cry; Clay, the great compromiser; and Calhoun, chief apologist for slavery, were the giants of American politics and it was their compromises that held the union together and their clashes that sent it flying apart. They died with slavery unresolved and the Civil War looming on the horizon. By the author of the Pulitzer Prize–winning Traitor to His Class. - Dave

Black Flags, Blue Waters by Eric Jay Dolin

Avast! This book is a delight, making pirate history engaging and fascinating. Every other page had some tidbit about piratical, world, and particularly American history that I couldn’t wait to talk about with people. The pirates are presented as honestly as possible, in their heroic triumphs and in the brutality and violence they were part of. Highly recommend for the pirate or history buff in your life. - Jax

House of Trump, House of Putin by Craig Unger

It’s tempting to get swept up in the salacious narratives of recent books on Trump (“Can you believe he really said that/did that/thinks that?”), but for true big-picture analysis, Craig Unger’s book is the one with staying power. Unger cuts through the daily crazy and lays out what has been true and known for a long time (but maddeningly not reported by mainstream media): Donald Trump’s relationship with organized crime, specifically, the Russian mafia. Going back decades, Unger lays out the money laundering, bailouts, and power plays that led to a mobster, beholden to a foreign power, in the White House. - S.B.
