The Fireman by Joe Hill

Joe Hill writes books I savor. He’s a born storyteller—as might be expected of the son of Stephen King—and The Fireman is his most ambitious novel to date. Already drawing comparisons to The Stand (both novels are set in a post-apocalyptic world that has been made so by a terrible virus, though the “flu” incorporates spontaneous combustion), The Fireman is tightly wound, thoughtfully crafted, and born of the fantastical. It’s beautiful and horrifying, a true pleasure to read.  —Dillon

The City of Mirrors by Justin Cronin

At long last, the wait is over! The final book in Justin Cronin’s trilogy has arrived, concluding the saga that began with The Passage. Revisiting characters you don’t expect, answering lingering questions (like what happened to the rest of the world), and catching up with our battered, stubborn band of heroes, The City of Mirrors will surprise you at every turn as it races to the final showdown that will decide the fate of humanity.  —Flannery

Sleeping Giants by Sylvain Neuvel

When Rose Franklin falls into a hole near her home, she has no idea how much it will color her life. At the bottom, there is a large hand. Years later, after she’s almost forgotten about it, she ends up studying the hole’s origins, which are far stranger than anyone could imagine. Most of the story is told through interview transcripts and journal excerpts; the disconnect adds to the mystery. Each page got my heart pounding and hungering for more.  —Ivy

Mongrels by Stephen Graham Jones

Mongrels is less glamorous and more realistic than your standard shape-shifter novel—it’s better, stronger, and more heartfelt. At the center is a young boy who may or may not wolf out, and his aunt and uncle who are trying to carve out any kind of existence they can—with their teeth if they must. It’s a truly inventive world, full of creative details (like why pantyhose are a bad idea for werewolves and what might happen when werewolves fall in love) and amazing characters. My hat is off to Stephen Jones; I highly recommend this read.  —Nici

Last Call at the Nightshade Lounge by Paul Krueger

One might imagine a book about demon-hunting bartenders and cocktails that infuse the drinker with magical abilities to be fantastically fun and full of hijinks, and Last Call certainly is that. But it’s also about growing into the adulthood that has been thrust upon you and finding the strength to take control of your life. I became ridiculously fond of Bailey and her team of mixologists and can’t wait to share her story. Cheers!   —Jax

The Watchmaker of Filigree Street by Natasha Pulley

A mysterious watch in the pocket of Nathaniel Steepleton makes its way through Victorian London, leading its owner toward his destiny. On the way, Steepleton meets the watch’s mysterious owner, Keita Mori, and an Oxford physicist, Grace Carrow. The story is fascinating and keeps you guessing, while the Victorian-style prose creates a picture of a city in turmoil. Even with the book’s dark overtone, I couldn’t help but be charmed.  —Ivy

Stories of Your Life and Others by Ted Chiang

I had a conversation with some booksellers about the term “literary science fiction.” I’m reluctant to separate this book from the genre for fear of being a pretentious snob. To me—an outsider who laments reading hours that are not spent nose-deep in epic fantasies and unsettling futures—literary sci-fi like Chiang’s is akin to the writing of a less-manic David Foster Wallace but has more traditional sci-fi elements than George Saunders would use, though Chiang has the level of mastery of both of those writers.  —Louise

The Autobiography of James T. Kirk by David A. Goodman

First, let me say I was skeptical of this book about the pivotal captain of the USS Enterprise—so much could go wrong here. But I am so, so glad I gave The Autobiography a chance. It exemplifies everything I love about Star Trek: it’s fun and endearing, surprisingly poignant and intelligent while still being action packed. I enjoyed the heck out of this book and fell in love all over again with Starfleet’s favored son.  —Jax
