Talk To Your Mom
What do Bookshop Santa Cruz, storytelling, mothers, NPR, and YOU have in common? Our project:
A story is the way we hand over to each other how we have lived, learned, imagined, and felt—it is the way we share our human experience. No one understands this better than NPR contributor Dave Isay, founder of StoryCorps. Since 2003, StoryCorps has been one of the most ambitious oral history projects ever undertaken. It has collected the life stories of more than fifty thousand Americans in all fifty states, and preserved these interviews for future generations at the Library of Congress. Millions of radio listeners look forward to hearing these stories each Friday morning on NPR.
Bookshop Santa Cruz welcomed Dave Isay to our store on Monday, April 26th at 7:30 to talk about his new book, Mom. In time for Mother’s Day, Isay selected StoryCorps’ most revelatory stories on the subject of motherhood. Through conversations between parents and children, partner and partner, siblings and friends, the life of the American mother unfolds in this amazing collection.
We were inspired by Dave Isay and the StoryCorps project. Listen to the following audio clips to hear samples from interviews that two staff members conducted with their own moms:
George and her mom • Stef and her mom
In the spirit of StoryCorps, Bookshop is collecting stories about mothers from our community. We invite you to participate in our project, Inspired by StoryCorps: Talk to Your Mom, by submitting an interview with or about your mother—or any mother—to our YouTube group:
www.youtube.com/group/talktoyourmom
In order to open submissions up and coordinate as many community efforts as possible, we’ve broken from the traditional audio-only format and chosen to host this project on YouTube. If you are not using a movie format to record your interview, you will need to create a movie format for your audio files using still images (we recommend programs such as iMovie and uMusic); YouTube does not upload audio-only or mp3 files directly. Bookshop will be collecting stories through Saturday, May 15th.
StoryCorps has compiled a Do-It-Yourself Instruction Guide that is easy to use and will prepare you and your interview partner to record a memorable conversation. That guide can be found at: www.storycorps.org/diy
We hope you will be inspired to participate in this memorable project honoring mothers. Talk to your mom—or any mom—then share your story!
