We think this lovely treasure of a book should be at the top of any nature lover’s reading list—and Bernd Heinrich’s many fans agree: “Heinrich brings an immense curiosity about nature's summer as well as the biological knowledge needed to describe what that curiosity discovers,” writes Booklist in a starred review. And bestselling author Amy Tan says, “Bernd Heinrich’s books open my eyes and help me see the wonder of the natural world…I love the fascinating details of his drawings, the lyricism of his observations, the way he unveils not only the physical workings of nature but the stories and dramas within it.”

Gavin Pretor-Pinney, founder of The Cloud Appreciation Society, had readers looking skyward with his terrific book The Cloudspotter’s Guide. He now takes us on a detailed tour through the waves we ride, feel, see and hear: brain waves, radio waves, infrared waves, microwaves, shock waves, light waves, and much more. Fascinating reading. —V.L

Saddled reminded me of my favorite animal memoir, Caroline Knapp’s Pack of Two. Like Knapp, Richards is at rock bottom, struggling with alcoholism and a failed relationship, when she crosses paths with an animal that gives her the courage and strength to rebuild her life. I would recommend this book to anyone who has experienced the dark side of addiction or simply a deep connection with an animal, equine or otherwise. —M.M.

Publishers Weekly writes, “The world as we know it has ended forever: that’s the melancholy message of this nonetheless cautiously optimistic assessment of the planet’s future by McKibben, whose The End of Nature first warned of global warming’s inevitable impact 20 years ago. McKibben’s prescription for coping on our new earth is to adopt ‘maintenance as our mantra,’ to think locally not globally, and to learn to live ‘lightly, carefully, gracefully.’”
