As we wait for the supposed September release date of George R. R. Martin’s A Dance with Dragons, it’s good to know there are other authors we can call on to fill our time. Fans of Martin will find Farrell’s work very familiar—the complex and well-detailed world, the narration from conflicting viewpoints, the plot full of broad political and social action—but not so familiar as to be devoid of surprises. And the good news is that Book One (now in paperback) feels complete in and of its own but there is plenty of excitement about Book Two’s release. —Nici

I’ve been following McKinty for awhile now, particularly his stunning Michael Forsythe trilogy, but this stand alone novel featuring Cuban detective Mercado is an excellent place to start for newcomers. Vengeance for a father’s death leads Mercado to pose as an illegal worker in a wealthy, celebrity-filled community outside of Denver, which gives McKinty a chance to do a lot of neat dissection of race and class along the way. (If you don’t want to water down the effect of a great opening chapter, skip the jacket blurbs and plunge right in!) —Seana Graham

The days after I began reading The Likeness are kind of a blank for me. I don’t remember where I went or whom I spoke to; all I remember is getting completely caught up in the atmosphere and storyline of this acutely gripping novel. Detective Cassie Maddox (co-star of French’s previous book, In the Woods) stumbles across the case of her life when a body turns up bearing an exact likeness to her own face, and finds herself thrown headfirst into her mysterious doppelganger’s life. —Kat
