The world can be a very
cruel place if you do not fit into society's strict standards and
norms. Part One of this book makes you feel not alone in the world
while Part Two gives you a slew of alternatives to help you through the
though times in life. Bornstein's 101 alternatives to suicide include
everything from "Keep walking" to "Try to keep someone else alive."
This book will make you proud to be different and proud to have made it
through your teen years. -Saraphine

Establishing a healthy
relationship with food is incredibly important for a child's
development and there's no better way to do so than getting kids into
the kitchen. Encouraging them to help select ingredients, plan meals,
and learn basic cooking techniques will help them make good decisions
about food and take pride in what they eat (instead of munching
mindlessly). There are many good introductory cookbooks written for
young children (such as those by Mollie Katzen), but right now I'm
loving one for grown-ups and kids, alike: The River Cottage Family Cookbook.
It brings everyone together to make delicious (not dumbed-down) food.
The recipes are terrific, as are the "how to eat" features, and the
book's great photos provide lots of inspiration. -S.B.

For almost 30 years now,
this book has spawned generations of environmental educators and nature
lovers. Critically acclaimed by National Audubon Society, Scouting
Organizations, and more, this guide offers extremely simple ways to
engage children in outdoor activities. With nearly no supplies needed,
anyone with a little imagination can awaken the wonders of nature for
the youth in their lives. This book is great for families and teachers
alike. -Jennifer

This collection of
essays by naturalists Nabhan and Trimble outline the importance of a
child's experiences with nature. The authors reflect on their childhood
memories and make insightful observations of their own children. The
result is a poetic offering of what nature means to youth development,
whether it be an open beach, a nature show on TV, or a cardboard box in
the inner city. Outdoor experiences define critical pieces of
childhood. A wonderful read. -Jennifer

Geeks: Genuine,
Enthusiastic, Empowered, Kids. I love learning and I thank my parents
for instilling that tenet in me. In her latest book, Marybeth Hicks
teaches parents how to encourage a passion for authentic learning and
self in children rather than consumerism and peer pressure. In a
society that embraces pop-culture here is a guidebook for
thought-culture. -Adrienne

Specifically designed
for young children, this book offers simple yet profound ways to
involve kids in the nature around them. The two things I love most
about this sweet little book is that it provides perfect ideas for all
seasons and weather, and it extends its teachings to all settings. So
whether you live in the country, the city, or the suburbs, it will give
you great ideas for getting kids back in nature where learning begins.

This book is relevant
now more than ever with education funding on the chopping block. Author
Jonathon Kozol shreds the notion that public education is either fair
or balanced in the U.S.. He argues that children, especially in poorer
communities, are severely disadvantaged due to overcrowding, racial
segregation, and under-paid staffing. From the eyes of children and
teachers in U.S. "ghetto schools," Kozol paints a horrifying picture of
what it's really like to exist in the worst schools. -Adrienne

Teachers and students
struggle with ways to feel empowered, included, nurtured, driven,
reflective, and creative in the classroom, and generally in life. What
a plainly beautiful model-grounded in the values of sensual experience,
work, and the joy of creating with one's hands and many hands-that
building and learning from a garden can accomplish all of those
lessons, both academic and beyond, in abundance. Alice's story of the
many generations of students, teachers, and volunteers who built and
continue to work this thriving garden is the story of quiet revolution,
community action, and hope. -Jen Toner

Pave the road to
parenthood with knowledge not intentions. I found this book to be a
fascinating read and very educational, even if I don't agree with every
aspect of its moral curricula. Harvard psychologist Richard Weissbourd
reveals many of the contradictions between the subtle messages in our
actions and the verbal instructions that we give children. These
contradictions exist throughout our lives, but nowhere are they more
obvious or dangerous. -Nici
