This brilliant book follows two friends lives over the course of twenty years, but only on July 15 of each year. Read it before the movie comes out! -Saraphine

Split between the narratives of Will Bird and his niece Annie, this story sifts through their sordid and unhappy pasts trying to decipher the roots of their family's pain and extract the hope for their future. Boyden's beautifully poetic prose, vivid descriptions of the Canadian north, and the intimate portrayal of hardships of First Nations people face make this an excellent novel. –Nici

Cromwell works his way up to an insider's role in Henry VIII's court at that crucial moment in history when Henry is seeking to dump first wife Catherine for Anne Boleyn. You may think you've heard it all before, but this is truly Mantel's vision, and it is entirely her own. Beautiful. -Seana

Tatjana Soli knows more about the Vietnam War than anyone I’ve heard of, and it shows in every sentence of her novel. The story centers around a photojournalist who drops out of college and becomes the first female combat photographer in Vietnam. A lush and arresting story. Nancy Pearl called it a “devastatingly awesome novel,” which should tell you something! -Kat

She falls in love with a handsome German, but again politics intervene to keep them apart. It’s a love story told against the background of war. A fable for the 21st century, For the Win emphasizes that the “real” world and the online can no longer be separated. The premise of a sweatshop of “gold farmers” trying to unionize may seem strange, but this story is an empowering adventure. Cory Doctorow has a message and a mission, and uses an awesome story to get the point across. -JS

This dark tale of mutual manipulation and questionable motives stuck in my brain for ages. The story feels reminiscent of Gothic classics yet surprisingly different as well. You could describe both the characters and the setting as bitter and bleak, but the story itself can only be called mesmerizing . -Nici

The Passage is the beginning of a truly epic trilogy. Cronin has a gift for language, and he brings his world and characters to life with rich prose and imagery. In this cerebral finale to Larsson’s Millennium trilogy, most of the action is in the courtroom and back offices, although shots are fired, to be sure. Blomqvist works tirelessly in Lisbeth Salander’s defense, and together they unravel the truth. Containing one of the best court scenes of all time, this is a satisfying conclusion to trilogy by an author whose work was cut short too soon. -FF

This book reached out and poked me right in the heart. Amy Bloom is the master at writing about love in a way that is never contrived or cliché. It’s a short story connection that contains a quartet of interlocked stories, which gives them the feeling of a novella. This is an immensely beautiful, satisfying book, highly recommended for anyone who loves good fiction. -Kat

This historical novel roped me in and didn't let go. Based on the true story of the Fox sisters, the two young girls who were the root of American Spiritualism, this novel uses life and death and the idea of communication in between to ask the question of how far will we go, but also then stop, when love is on the line? A great read. -SMC

This is one of those gorgeous novels about a difficult subject that you just can’t put down. The central character is Jack, a precocious boy who was born in a reinforced garden shed, where he lives with his imprisoned mother. It is Jack’s voice that saves the story from complete darkness, even in the most harrowing passages. Surprisingly funny and warm, and one of my favorites this year. -Kat

Rose is just about to turn nine when she discovers a startling new power: she can taste people’s emotions in the food they make. How she deals with this discovery is the driving force of this colorful novel, which charts her adolescence and young adulthood. It’s a story about what happens to a family who knows way more about each other than they should. -Kat

A neon-haloed fever dream of a book, the novel of the year. Before anything else, a quick synopsis: Teenage vampire hobo junkies rage across the pacific northwest, tripping on blood, nyquil, Us magazine and the icky sprawl of suburbia. And yet this description dissolves when you realize that you're reading high literature. Think Blake and Burroughs in a blender. -VL
