William Ury is the author of Getting to Yes, the world’s bestselling book on negotiation that, with Roger Fisher, created a radical new approach to negotiation now known around the world as win-win. Serving as a mediator in highly sensitive, high stakes negotiations and conflicts including civil wars, boardroom battles, and family feuds, William Ury has helped millions successfully change the way they negotiate with others. Through his hard-won experience, and as co-founder of the Harvard Negotiation Project, William Ury has come to realize that the biggest obstacle to “win-win” agreements is not the other side, difficult as they may be; rather it is actually our self and our natural tendency to react in ways that do not serve our true interests. In short, we get in our own way to getting what we really want. Getting to Yes with Yourself is about negotiating with yourself and conducting the inner game of negotiation in order to improve our engagement with loved ones, colleagues, competitors and others. This book is the “missing prequel” to Getting to Yes and reveals how we can turn our biggest obstacle into our biggest opportunity. Drawing deeply on his personal and professional experience negotiating conflicts of all types, William Ury presents a practical, proven-effective method to help anyone get to yes with themselves first as the path to dramatically improving their ability to get to yes with others. By learning to understand and influence ourselves first, we lay the critical groundwork for understanding and influencing others.

Ury’s work has been widely featured in the media from The New York Times to the Financial Times and from CNN to the BBC; his popular TED talk, “The Walk from No to Yes,” has been heavily cited in blogs, magazines, and on radio as an innovative and simple model for conflict resolution. Ury has taught negotiation and mediation to tens of thousands of corporate executives, labor leaders, diplomats, and military officers. With former president Jimmy Carter, Ury co-founded the International Negotiation Network, a non-governmental body seeking to end civil wars around the world. Ury served as a consultant to the Crisis Management Center at the White House and is the co-founder of the Climate Parliament, described by Time magazine as the “Google for global politics,” offering members of congress and parliaments across the world an Internet-based forum to address practical solutions for climate change.
