Thomas Hickenbottom
Bookshop welcomes Thomas Hickenbottom, a fourth-generation central coast native and a surfer for over 50 years in Santa Cruz, for the debut discussion of his terrific new book, Surfing in Santa Cruz.
Surfing was reportedly first introduced to the U.S. mainland in Santa Cruz by three visiting Hawaiian princes in the late 1880s. Since those early days, the Santa Cruz surfing culture has blossomed into a thriving lifestyle. Surfing in Santa Cruz is a concise historical overview of the diverse and colorful surfing culture inhabiting our area.
Author Thomas Hickenbottom began wave riding back in the balsa era of the late 1950s. During the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s, Hickenbottom represented the Santa Cruz surfing community in contests up and down the California coast. He is a member of the Santa Cruz Surfing Club Preservation Society and the Santa Cruz Longboard Union. Using his own memories of surfing in Santa Cruz as well as extensive research, Hickenbottom gives a detailed account of the history of surfing in Santa Cruz.
Mr. Hickenbottom will be discussing the book, signing copies, and taking questions from the audience.
