Patrice Vecchione, Step into Nature

Tuesday, April 7, 2015 - 7:30pm

This delightful evening featuring beloved local poet, columnist, and writing teacher Patrice Vecchione, introduced by environmental advocate Wallace J. Nichols, is the book launch for Step into Nature—and a kick-off for National Poetry Month. Vecchione will be joined by Friends of Santa Cruz State Parks, a nonprofit sustaining the legacy of our area's beautiful parks and beaches. Representatives from Friends of Santa Cruz State Parks will be present at this event with information about their organization, and you'll have the opportunity to donate directly to the nonprofit.

From the author of Writing and the Spiritual Life comes a guide that will replenish your connection to the nature and inspire you to develop and strengthen your imagination.

The natural world has inspired artists, seekers, and thinkers for millennia, but in recent times, as the pace of life has sped up, its demands have moved us indoors. Yet nature’s capacity to lead us to important truths, to invigorate and restore our imagination and equilibrium, is infinite.

Step into Nature makes nature personal again by stimulating awareness and increasing our understanding of the environment. But being in nature doesn’t mean flying off to remote, faraway places. Nature is as close as opening your front door—and opening your heart to the sky above, the miniature gardens that push their way up between the sidewalk cracks in our cities, and the small stream just down the road.

Vecchione demonstrates how nature can support and enhance your creative output, invigorate your curiosity, and restore your sense of connection to and love of the earth. Included throughout the book is “The Cabinet of Curiosities,” exercises and suggestions for practical and unexpected ways to stimulate your imagination, deepen your relationship with nature, and experience the harmony between creativity and the natural world.

Patrice Vecchione’s other books include The Knot Untied, Territory of Wind, The Body Eclectic, Faith & Doubt, and more collections and anthologies. She teaches writing workshops for adults and children in Santa Cruz and Monterey, at public libraries, schools, community centers, and privately. She also leads collage-making workshops and writing retreats. A long time member of the Monterey Bay writing community, Vecchione grew up in Santa Cruz. Bookshop Santa Cruz is excited to celebrate Vecchione’s newest publication with a reading, Q&A, and signing!
