One of the goals of our Words to Act On partnership is to facilitate a dialogue about important issues through books. Bookshop Santa Cruz and the Santa Cruz County Community Action Board Immigration Project have selected Enrique's Journey by Sonia Nazaro as a community-wide read. We encourage you to pick up your copy today and plan to join us for a moderated book discussion Sunday, November 5th at 7:00pm (free).

This Community Read Discussion will be moderated by Fernando Leiva, Associate Professor of Latin America and Latino Studies at the University of California, Santa Cruz. Also joining the discussion will be Valeria Chávez-Ayala, Academic Counselor and Undocumented Student Services Coordinator at UC Santa Cruz. Doug Keegan, Program Director/Attorney Santa Cruz County Immigration Project

Enrique's Journey is the true story of Enrique, a teenager from Honduras, who sets out on a journey, braving hardship and peril, to find his mother, who had no choice but to leave him when he was a child and go to the United States in search of work. Enrique's story will bring to light the daily struggles of migrants, legal and otherwise, and the complicated choices they face simply trying to survive and provide for the basic needs of their families. The issues seamlessly interwoven into this gripping nonfiction work for young people are perfect for discussion.

"A heartwrenching account. Provides a human face, both beautiful and scarred, for the undocumented. A must read."-- Kirkus Reviews, Starred
