Book Choice: Bill Bryson’s Shakespeare: The World as Stage

Our next Community Book Group celebrates the start of Shakespeare Santa Cruz’s 2010 summer season by reading Bill Bryson’s Shakespeare: The World as Stage for our next Community Book Group selection. Bestselling author Bryson explores the life and work of Shakespeare in a typically Brysonian fashion. That is to say, he has crafted a travelogue of sorts, narrating his quest for the Bard.

We invite you to read Shakespeare and then to join us for a community discussion (of both the book and The Bard) facilitated by Julie Minnis. Our special guest speaker will be UCSC professor emeritus—and admired Shakespeare expert—Michael Warren. Shakespeare will be discounted to the whole community at 10% off its cover price from May 21st until the June 21st meeting date (for those last minute readers!). We hope you’ll join us.

PS—There will be snacks and tea!!

William Shakespeare, the most celebrated poet in the English language, left behind nearly a million words of text, but his biography has long been a thicket of wild supposition arranged around scant facts. With a steady hand and his trademark wit, Bill Bryson sorts through this colorful muddle to reveal the man himself. His Shakespeare is like no one else's—the beneficiary of Bryson's genial nature, his engaging skepticism, and a gift for storytelling unrivaled in our time.
