Throughout
the month of October 2009, the Downtown Association and many
collaborators, including Bookshop Santa Cruz, will be presenting a series of events and exhibits that
look back twenty years to the day the earth shook. In
commemoration of the 20 year anniversary of the earthquake, Bookshop will
be hosting a poetry event that reflects back and looks forward.
Following the Loma Prieta Earthquake on October 17, 1989, poet Patrice Vecchione's young students at Gault Elementary School did what they knew to do, they wrote poems about what the quake was like. These poems and their
illustrations became a book, Fault Lines, which was launched six months later at Bookshop Santa Cruz.
Using the poems as inspiration, artist Diane Grunes then created an art
installation that beautified some of the cyclone fencing surrounding
the fallen buildings.
Patrice, Diane, and the now grown-up poets, will
gather to read the poems from Fault Lines, look back at their
experiences of the quake and discuss how it influenced their lives.
Some of Diane’s original art installations will also be shown. In
addition, there are only ten copies of Fault Lines left in
print, all of which will go on sale that night with full proceeds going
to the Santa Cruz Beach Flats Community Center.

Please join us for our Community
Book Group—a monthly book group open to everyone in the community and
centered on works by Bay Area authors. Bookshop’s next Community Book Group selection is Mahbod Seraji’s powerful new novel, Rooftops of Tehran.
Set in 1970s Iran during the shah's regime, Seraji's wonderful
coming-of-age story is at times funny and sweet as well as
thought-provoking and heart-wrenching. Booklist calls it "a powerful tale of the
universal longings of teenagers compounded by the horrors of tyranny."
Julie
Minnis will lead our facilitated discussion of Rooftops of Tehran at 7:30pm, and
author Mahbod Seraji will join us at 8:00pm to discuss his writing
process and answer your questions. Like all great book groups meetings, there will be snacks and tea!

We are honored to host a reading, book talk, and signing with author and activist, Judy Shepard for her book, The Meaning of Matthew.
In this poignant memoir, the mother of Matthew Shepard shares her story
about her son’s death and the choice she made to become an
international gay rights activist.
Today, the name Matthew Shepard is
synonymous with gay rights, but before his grisly murder in 1998,
Matthew was simply Judy Shepard’s son. The Meaning of Matthew
follows the Shepard family from the days immediately after the crime to
Judy Shepard’s decision to open up to the public and give her son’s
life and death a political meaning by founding The Matthew Shepard
Foundation. (The Matthew Shepard Foundation works hard to share
Matthew's dream of replacing hate in the world with understanding,
compassion, and acceptance. The Foundation honors Matthew’s legacy by
fighting for passage of The Matthew Shepard Act, strengthening the
LGBTQ & Allied Youth online community (at http://matthewsplace.com),
providing resources and support to schools performing The Laramie
Project, and continuing to build their national speaking program.
Please visit their website: (http://mathewshepard.org for more information).
Heart-wrenchingly
honest, Ms. Shepard’s memoir captures both the historical significance
of one young man’s life and death, as well as one ordinary woman’s
struggle to cope with the unthinkable.
We anticipate a large crowd for Ms. Shepard's event, and have, for the first
time ever, made priority seating/and signing available. ANYONE and EVERYONE in the community is
welcome at this free event, but due to its expected popularity, we’ve
implemented a system that with a purchase of The Meaning of Matthew, people will be
given a voucher for prioritized seating and signing. We will also be
changing our event space layout to allow for additional standing room
for those without seats, to ensure that as many people as possible have
the chance to take part in this night.
Bookshop
Santa Cruz will be giving 10% of our book sales to benefit our event’s
co-sponsors: The Diversity Center’s Equality Action Project &
Pisces Moon’s Young Company Program. Pisces Moon will be performing a scene from The Laramie Project at our event.
And speaking of Pisces Moon check this out:
Before our event, from 5:30 - 6 PM on October 23 at the Vets Hall, 846 Front St., Santa Cruz, Pisces Moon Productions and The Equality Action Project of Santa Cruz County will honor Judy Shepard with a wine and cheese Reception.
Then, from 6 - 7 PM, there will be a benefit honoring "The Power of the Individual",
also at the Vets Hall. The program will feature Susan Myer Silton, John Laird, Cynthia
Mathews, Neal Coonerty, Gennefa Jonker and others from Santa Cruz County who will join her in addressing the ways we effect change through the arts, activism and community.
Proceeds from the Reception and " The Power of the Individual" Benefit will support the
missions of Pisces Moon Productions, The Equality Action Project of Santa Cruz County,
and the Matthew Shepard Foundation.
These are ticketed events, please see www.santacruztickets.com, however the first 100 copies of The Meaning of Matthew purchased from Bookshop Santa Cruz will come with a free entry ticket to the 6-7pm benefit.
The Equality Action Project of Santa Cruz County was created by The GLBT Alliance of Santa Cruz County and is an affiliate of The Diversity Center of Santa Cruz County.
There will be priority seating available at this event. A priority seating voucher is free with a purchase of The Meaning of Matthew and an additional seating voucher can be purchased for $5. To reserve your seating online, please purchase the item "The Meaning of Matthew--with Priority Seating Voucher". If you are also interested in an additional voucher, please purchase the item "The Meaning of Matthew--Extra Voucher” (limit one extra voucher per purchase of book). Bookshop Santa Cruz invites you to an evening focused on politics, activism, and the importance of speaking out.
In Robert Cohen’s new book, Freedom’s Orator,
we are given the first biography of Mario Savio, the brilliant leader
of Berkeley's Free Speech Movement, the largest and most disruptive
student rebellion in American history. Savio risked his life to
register black voters in Mississippi in the Freedom Summer of 1964 and
did more than anyone to bring daring forms of non-violent protest from
the civil rights movement to the struggle for free speech and academic
freedom on American campuses. Drawing upon previously unavailable Savio
papers, as well as oral histories from friends and fellow movement
leaders, Freedom's Orator illuminates Mario's egalitarian
leadership style, his remarkable eloquence, and the many ways he
embodied the youthful idealism of the 1960s.
Cohen will be joined by local professor Bettina Aptheker who will be
reading from her memoir, Intimate Politics. Born into one of the most influential Communist
families in the United States, Aptheker lived her parents' politics,
witnessing first-hand one of the most dramatic upheavals in American
history. Along with Mario Savlo and others, Ms. Aptheker was a leader of Berkeley's Free Speech Movement.
Please join us as these two talented
authors and activists speak to importance of revolution, freedom, and finding voice
in the face of adversity.

In the 10 years since the bestselling cookbook How It All Vegan! was first published, veganism has “come out of the closet,” and is now considered a legitimate diet and lifestyle not only for those wishing to improve their health, but also for those who care deeply about the welfare of animals. This tenth-anniversary edition includes a new color photo section, new recipes, and a new introduction. We can’t wait to welcome coauthor Sarah Kramer back to Bookshop to hear her speak passionately about the impact of veganism on her life over the past decade. GARY YOUNG, FORREST HAMER, FRANCES PAYNE ADLER, DIANA GARCIA & other contributors to:
Fire & Ink: An Anthology of Social Action Writing
**please note early time for this event
------------------------------------------------------
Fire and Ink
is a powerful and impassioned anthology of stories, poems, interviews,
and essays that confront some of the most pressing social issues of our
day.. Designed to inspire and inform, this collection embodies the
concepts of breaking silence, bearing witness, resistance, and
resilience. Beyond students and teachers, the book will appeal to all
readers with a commitment to social justice.
Fire and Ink brings
together, for the first time in one volume, politically engaged writing
by poets, fiction writers, and essayists. Including many of our finest
writers: Marta Espada, June Jordan, Patricia Smith, Gloria Anzalda,
Sharon Olds, Arundhati Roy, Sonia Sanchez, Carolyn Forche, Chitra
Banerjee Divakaruni, Alice Walker, Linda Hogan, Gary Soto, Kim Blaeser,
Minnie Bruce Pratt, Li-Young Lee, and Jimmy Santiago Baca, among others
this is an indispensable collection.
This
groundbreaking anthology marks the emergence of social action writing
as a distinct field within creative writing and literature. Featuring
never-before-published pieces, as well as reprinted material, Fire and Ink
is divided into ten sections focused on significant social issues,
including identity, sexuality and gender, the environment, social
justice, work, war, and peace. The pieces can often be gripping, such
as Frame, a in which Adrienne Rich confronts government and police brutality, or Chris Abani’s Ode to Joy, which documents great courage in the face of mortal danger.
We hope you join us for this reading, Q&A, and signing from a group of driven and dedicated writers!
