Young Adult

I absolutely love this book. The story of a girl in a magical land who harbors a secret heritage that could either ruin her life or save a kingdom, this lyrical book is filled with music, courtly intrigue, and plenty of adventure. Seraphina is perfect for anyone who loves a good book about a strong young woman finding herself. (And dragons. Lots of dragons.)

Things get weird after Glory and her friend drink the petrified bat. Glory, struggling with her upcoming graduation and concerns about her future, starts seeing visions of people’s futures—and what she sees is brutal. Not only is this book a roar of feminist-teen awesomeness, but I adored photograph-obsessed Glory, and loved watching her become a strong, assertive woman.

I am so overjoyed that this book exists. Not only does it feature characters who are Mexican-American (YES) and gay (HELL YES); it's beautifully written, painfully true, and unforgettably touching. It's an absolutely spot-on portrayal of friendship blossoming awkwardly and inexorably into love.

This book is the equivalent of that warm-crazy-high feeling you get when you're in a car during a storm with your best friend who you have feelings for and you don't know whether or not you're going to kiss them. And I didn't know how to put that feeling into words until I read that very beautiful scene. It's one of the most honest and amazing literary portrayals of coming to terms with your sexuality and identity.

“It’s amazing. Dark and resilient with a core theme that simply cannot be ignored. Yet for all that, Preus has tapped into a bit of harsh reality with her title that may give pause to all but the stoutest hearts. Fortunately, she tempers this reality with an artist’s license. With folktales and beautifully written prose. With a deep sisterly bond, and a serious consideration of what is right and what wrong and what is necessary in desperate circumstances. I don’t expect everyone to read this book and instantly love it, but I do expect people to read it. Slow to start, smart when it continues, and unlike anything you’ve ever really read before.” —Elizabeth Bird, School Library Journal

At 13, Jude was the daredevil: surfer, cliff diver, and boy magnet. Her twin brother, Noah, knows she’s their athletic father’s favorite and everything he is not: popular, poised, fearless. But at least Noah has their mother’s devotion—she sees Noah’s artistic genius and encourages him to go to the top-notch art school in their neighborhood. Three years later, the twins have turned upside down. Jude is the oddball-out at the fancy competitive art school and Noah pals around with his bros on the cross-country team, ignoring his gift and living a bland, safe life. With a fresh voice in teen literature, Jandy Nelson spins a funny, playful, heart-wrenching tale of two teens lost in translation. Grades 9 & up.

Quincy and Biddy are “speddies”—that is, special education kids—who have made it through the school system and who now need to be put somewhere by the state; their families sure don’t want to take them back. The two very different girls wind up in a tidy garage apartment, trading work for rent from the elderly, insightful Elizabeth. Quincy doesn’t trust her, but then, Quincy doesn’t trust anyone, not since her mother tricked her grandmother into taking her in and then ran off. Biddy is an open book, gullible and slow, but she hides secrets under the huge trenchcoat she sports all hours of the day. As the girls navigate their new lives and each other, an unexpected resilience and even wisdom begins to shine through. A supremely well written and surprising tale that will upset your preconceptions while sucking you in from the first few lines. Grades 10 & up.

Years earlier, Finn Easton’s mother was killed in a bizarre accident that left Finn with a broken back and seizures. After the accident, his father wrote a book, taking for his protagonist much of what made Finn uniquely Finn—his name, his heterochromatic eyes, his habit of viewing time in terms of miles rather than minutes, his epilepsy, the scar on his back. The book, The Lazarus Door, became a sci-fi cult classic known everywhere, and Finn is unsure if he is real. In balance, there are several very real, very good things in Finn’s life—his honest, tender relationship with his dad; his possibly insane but definitely charming, raunchy, best friend, Cade Hernandez; and—new girl in 11th grade—Julia, amusing and creative and completely first-love-worthy. Adventures ensue. 100 Sideways Miles is smart, funny, profane, quite odd, and warmly humanistic. Grades 9–12.

There are books that evoke nostalgia of a certain place or time, and then there's This One Summer. Cousins Mariko and Jillian Tamaki have created a gorgeous graphic novel which perfectly encapsulates that age between kid and teenager, that feeling of wanting to be swept away in something bigger than yourself, and everything wonderful and terrible about having to grow up.
