Young Adult

In A Brief History of Montmaray, Cooper introduced us to a (fictional) island kingdom where the royalty outnumber their subjects. Now in The FitzOsbornes in Exile, the royal family is stranded in pre–World War II England and Sophie, second princess, finally has her chance to indulge in fancy dress balls and flirting. And yet the currents of war are sweeping over Europe, and even Sophie may have a role to play in saving her kingdom. A sly tale of growing up in circumstances both ordinary and extraordinary. I can’t wait for the next book (coming in October).

Where do you draw the line? When does the situation reach the point where more than simple attention is required-when action is needed, standing up for your rights and what you believe in? In a world where “Occupy” is more than a verb, SOPA, IPA, and ACTA lurking in the wings, Cory Doctorow presents a fable for the rapidly-approaching future.

An ancient vampire and a baker with magical affinity for sunlight don't sound like they'd get along, but when Constantine and Sunshine save each other's lives, they don't have much of a choice. McKinley's narrative voice is flawless, and I love the matter-of-fact existence of werewolves, demons, and charms in a world also filled with computers and cinnamon rolls. -

Colin has two great fears: that he will never do something that matters, and that he will always be alone. Devastated after being dumped for the 19th time, by the 19th girl named Katherine, he and his only friend embark on his first-ever road trip, pursuing, finally, the idea that will leave his mark—an equation to accurately predict how long any relationship will last—while trying to finally let go of the idea of love.

Just broke up? This one’s for us! This beautiful book will make you cry and heal all at the same time. While this is an altogether exceptional book, what really strikes me is the amount of passion that went into making it. Every page, every illustration impresses upon me what a labor of love this was, for both author and illustrator, and that makes it a heartbreaking work of art.

Hazel isn’t your average 16-year old: goes to community college, recites T.S. Eliot from memory, watches marathons of America’s Next Top Model. And she can’t breath without the oxygen cart wheeling behind her. Augustus Waters, one-legged 17-year old virgin, may see a dead girl in her—or may be the one person to truly see her. This isn’t a story about cancer, or cancer survivors, but about love, in all its beauty, humiliation, pain, and ecstasy.

This is one of the most lushly imagined books I've read in a long time, and it also happens to be one of the best love stories I've read in awhile as well. It's about a tortured young woman named Briony who is convinced that she is a witch, and that she was somehow responsible for her stepmother's untimely death. The language is an incredible blend of old-world English and modern-day poetry.

Something bad happened to Cat, and she hasn’t talked to anyone since. But now the boy she called best friend has been left for dead, the apparent victim of a hate crime, and Cat is the only one seeking justice in her tiny Southern town. But her years apart mean more is going on than Cat imagined: this crime is more than hatred. An enthralling mystery.
