This is the first work of theoretical physics I’ve read and I loved it! In Dark Matter and the Dinosaurs, Randall artfully introduces her theory in ways that are accessible to an amateur audience. A disk of dark matter, she argues, may have been responsible for rerouting that infamous meteor toward Earth, resulting in the extinction of the dinosaurs 66 million years ago. If you’re not already one, Randall will leave you feeling like a physicist!  --Ashley

I LOVED this book! It was completely fascinating, and made me think about rain in a completely different way. It touches on everything from the role rain played in the creation of our planet and continues to play in its survival, to the invention of the Macintosh raincoat to a tiny town in India that bottles the scent of rain. It talks about our future in this changing climate, and about how we have altered areas of the planet to create the problems happening today (I'm talking about you, Southern Florida!). Engaging and thorough, this is a fantastic book.

I loved Susan Casey's first two books (The Wave, The Devil’s Teeth), but neither had the impact on me this did. After a personal encounter with wild dolphins, Casey began traveling the globe researching all things dolphin. Exploring their complex lives, intelligence, and most of all, their complicated relationship with us, this thought-provoking book is marked by Casey's brightly descriptive prose. By turns awe-inspiring, heartbreaking, and infuriating, this book stays with you. I highly recommend it.

Well known for predicting sports games and tasting yummy, octopuses (never octopi!) have firmly situated themselves in our culture. Sy Montgomery’s book explores another side of these remarkable creatures—their consciousness, memory, and emotions. While scientists have already begun establishing the intelligence of octopuses, the author pushes further, developing friendships with these creatures. Wonderful for any animal lover, it confirms what many of us already know, that all animals—including octopuses—express and feel love.

A wonderful introduction to Muir's work, this book focuses on his animal observations. The artwork reflects his work: simply stated, but rich with details. Well-paired, it includes a variety of his adventures, from dogs and salmon to domestic sheep and bears.
