Science Fiction/Fantasy

A smaller-scale and more intimate novel than her star-system-spanning Ancillary Justice trilogy, this book is still Ann Leckie at her best: her characters are sharp-witted and understated, her world-building is rich and feels long-inhabited, and the plot hums as it follows a murder mystery/heist drama that’s really all about the protagonist’s search for place and meaning. - Stuart

Hassan Blasim, author of the haunting book The Corpse Exhibition, has assembled science fiction stories from Iraqi writers, all set 100 years after the U.S. occupation of Iraq. These stories demonstrate how Iraq's past will influence its future by blending history with fantastical technology. The defiance to imagine the future so creatively when at times even the arrival of the next day is uncertain is the spirit of this collection. - Louise

This dystopian narrative set in future-China starts like gender-swapped Jane Austen meets The Giver, and ends like a freaking spy thriller. These characters have my heart:  a charismatic man with autism; a kind, closeted older gentleman; and a woman who wishes the men in her life would just please stop to communicate for once! I grew to adore this book—especially XX, whose growth toward triumph is a brilliant defense of individual human worth. - a.c.

The year is 2044, and a performance enhancing drug is causing people to work themselves to death. Tractor Jack, a female drug pirate with a submarine, embarks upon a mission to stop the spread of the deadly drug before it becomes an epidemic. An unlikely man-robot love affair sweetens an otherwise dystopian storyline. The political undertone (a pharmaceutical big bad, human and A.I. trafficking) echoes Margaret Atwood. This is my early pick for best Sci-Fi book of the year. - Jason

I am not shy about being a fan of Leckie’s, and I’m happy to say that although Provenance is very different from her other books, it is still very good. It has the same sense of exploration, politics, and self-discovery that I love so much about her writing. Ingray’s story has a more intimate feel, a story of family and finding one’s place rather than the grand epic. But I found I enjoyed it all the same, and I think you will, too. - Jax

This book is what you get if you add fae magic to “Kiss Kiss Bang Bang.” Millie is a delight, with all her dysfunction and her very real struggles with various disabilities. L.A. looms large as a character in its own right; the book is a kind of love/hate letter to the entertainment industry. I enjoyed the snark, loved the characters and was thrilled by the mystery. - Jax

The book is set in a dark future where an alien race has abducted the last surviving humans in hopes of helping them repopulate and revive an irradiated Earth. With a timeline that spans generations, Butler’s story was daring for her time and it’s still very relevant today, as she pushes the boundaries of race, gender, sexuality, and species. - Jade

This is an inventive locked-room murder mystery set on a generational space ship. The six crew members are clones, each of whom come to life with no memory of how, or by whom, their predecessor was killed.  Each of the crew members is a suspect and each of their histories provides clues in determining what actually happened. - Trey

Ignore everything about the cover, I promise this book is the fantasy book of your dreams. Zosia fought her war with a band of misfits, won her crown, but in the end everything turned out worse than expected. Each character is incredibly fleshed out and the story takes the tropes of the genre and smashes them to pieces. I was mad I didn't pick it up sooner. - Ivy

One of the most lauded stories of 2015 was Nancy Kress’s Nebula-winning novella Yesterday’s Kin, a story beginning with an evolutionary biologist and a space ship above New York, but at its heart (as with much of the best science fiction) about humanity. We couldn’t be more excited that this summer Kress expands upon her world and characters with the first entry in a new hard science fiction trilogy, Tomorrow’s Kin
