Cooking

Chef Morimoto states in his introduction that he named this book after Julia Child’s, in the hopes that it will make Japanese cooking more accessible to the home cook. He achieves that and more, with mouth-watering photos, a wide array of recipes, and a conversational tone that makes me want to hang out with him even more than I already did. Part traditional Japanese cuisine, part sassy Iron Chef creativity, this is a wonderful book for new and old fans alike.                            —Rachel

Chez Panisse chef Cal Peternell has followed up his award-winning first book, Twelve Recipes—called “the best beginner’s cookbook of the year, if not the decade” by the New York Times—with an equally warm and smart sequel. A Recipe for Cooking takes home cooks to the next level by sharing easy-to-master recipes and tips for planning and organizing meals for occasions big and small. Peternell describes his new book as a blend of his home kitchen and the kitchen at Chez Panisse, which sounds like an ideal combination to me.          —S.B.

John Currence, author of the awesome Pickles, Pigs, and Whiskey, returns with a book dedicated to the joys of the Southern breakfast, inspired by his popular restaurant in Oxford, Mississippi. Acclaimed cookbook author Fuchsia Dunlop (Every Grain of Rice) continues to garner praise, this time for her beautiful new cookbook, Land of Fish and Rice. “Long considered an authority on Chinese cuisine, Dunlop focuses on Jiangnan food, which she spent 10 years studying, in her latest. This particular region is known for its balanced, health-oriented dishes, evident in exquisite vegetable recipes like slivered radish buns and spicy Chinese cabbage.” —Tasting Table

“It’s been years since Anthony Bourdain left the kitchen and started traveling the world in search of the best food and the stories it tells. With Appetites, Bourdain brings us to his home, where he has put his encyclopedic knowledge of world cuisines and his first-hand experience as a chef and cook to work for him as an entertainer and host. The self-described ‘psychotic, anally retentive, bad-tempered Ina Garten’ offers readers recipes and guidance to smartly and efficiently cook at home.” —Eater

I know my way around the kitchen and really love to cook, but one thing I’m not good at, food-wise, is planning ahead. (Which is why I find myself running to Shopper’s Corner nearly every day after work.) I have high hopes that this new book from the founders of the powerhouse culinary website Food52 will turn things around for me. Packed with planning, shopping, and cooking tips, plus more than 100 recipes (including flexible base dishes that can be made ahead of time), A New Way to Dinner should be a great resource for any busy (or unorganized) (or both, ahem) home cook.   —S.B.

Dorie Greenspan writes outstanding cookbooks. Her recipes are spot on and she is a terrific writer and teacher. All of my copies of her books (most notably Baking: From My Home to Yours) are dog-eared and stained. Published just in time for the holiday baking season, Dorie’s Cookies is full of great recipes for all kinds of cookies, from brownies and bars to rolled and drop cookies. I made the Peanut Butter and Fudge Brownies for a Bookshop party and have never received so many compliments. Don’t miss our book talk and signing with Dorie Greenspan on Friday, November 11th, at 7:00 p.m. Sample recipes from Dorie’s Cookies at this event!                                                  —S.B.

One of the most delightful parts about watching Ina Garten’s show, The Barefoot Contessa, is catching a glimpse of the relationship she has with her husband of 46 years. (Do they ever look at each other without a twinkle in their eyes?) In her new cookbook, Ina shares 85 never-before-published recipes that she makes at home for Jeffrey. What a treat to not only have a new collection of Barefoot Contessa recipes (the cake on the cover is excellent), but to get a personal look at the beloved cook’s life and love.                          —S.B.

I wanted to eat at Marcus Samuelsson’s Harlem restaurant, Red Rooster, ever since it opened in 2010, and happily got my chance earlier this year. It was so worth the wait. Everything we had—from the cocktails to the cornbread, fried chicken to fresh donuts—was so fantastic that we agreed it was one of the best meals we’d ever eaten. Samuelsson is sharing Red Rooster’s recipes in this fantastic new cookbook, which not only captures the food but the spirit of the restaurant and the history, vibrancy, and culture of Harlem. Highly recommended.         —S.B.
