S.B.'s Reviews

Before she became a mother of twins, Stefanie loved to spend her spare time cooking, gardening, crafting, and watching her beloved Giants. Now that she has no spare time, she manages to enjoy those pursuits only when she’s able to convince her girls to join her. She has been the cookbook buyer at Bookshop Santa Cruz for over 20 years.

Two respected and best-selling journalists piece together the story of Russia’s sophisticated, years-long effort to upend American democracy using cyber warfare before, during, and after Trump’s election. Isikoff and Corn are not only accomplished reporters, but they know how to both lay out the big picture as well as provide fascinating details. Since “Putin’s War on America” continues to unfold, with new developments and revelations seemingly every day, Russian Roulette is not a definitive look back on an ominous time in history; but it is a fascinating read that addresses not only the Russians’ role, but the contributions—wittingly and otherwise—of the Trump and Clinton campaigns, the F.B.I., and even President Obama. - S.B.

When I read Tamar Adler’s first book, An Everlasting Meal, I was taken by her lovely way with words. There is a timeless quality to her writing, which makes the focus of her new book—rekindling classic recipes—a perfect pairing. From Steak Diane to Peach Melba, Oysters Rockefeller to Shrimp Scampi, Adler muses on the original recipes for these dishes, then updates them with modern techniques and flavors. Nostalgic, but forward thinking, this is food writing at its best. - S.B.

Count me among Deb Perelman’s most loyal fans. (I couldn’t even tell you the number of her recipes that have become family favorites if I tried.) With incredible charm and a passion for cooking, Perelman shares recipes (on her blog and previous cookbook) for food that you really want to eat. Her new collection, Smitten Kitchen Every Day, is filled with over a hundred recipes for everything from breakfast to dinner to dessert. I’ve just started cooking from it and have already found so many new family favorites! - S.B.

David Tanis, former head chef at Chez Panisse (for 25 years!), never fails to write cookbooks that speak to me. I flip through the pages of his books and want to cook everything I see. His recipes have a simplicity and straightforwardness that I adore, but the flavors and finished dishes defy that ease. Tanis’s recipes have always focused on great ingredients, and his new cookbook, Market Cooking, is a showcase. Tanis shares his knowledge of and passion for produce—from butter beans to parsnips to shitake mushrooms—in this gorgeous and essential book. - S.B.

Jim Lahey, owner of the acclaimed Sullivan Street Bakery in New York, has been on a mission to empower home cooks to bake their own bread. Ten years ago he introduced the “no knead” method to bread making, which practically made him a household name. In his new book, he turns his attention to sourdough and Italian breads, as well as pizza dough, brioche, croissants, and sandwiches. His no-fuss recipes will win over any baker who, like me, is intimidated by yeast. - S.B.

There are not enough superlatives to describe this book! Suffice it to say that Sweet lives up to the standards—gorgeous photography, complex flavors, and enticing recipes—that Yotam Ottolenghi (Plenty, Jerusalem) set with his previous books. Sweet features sophisticated but accessible baked goods and desserts, from cookies and cakes to custard and ice cream. Some recipes are quite simple and familiar but somehow turn out phenomenally good (Chocolate Chip and Pecan Cookies), while others stretched me to try new ingredients and techniques (cookies with an orange, cinnamon, and red pepper infusion) but are very worth the effort. This book is a knockout. - S.B.

In the wake of the election, Julia Turshen (author of the excellent Small Victories cookbook) felt an urgent call to activism. Transforming from a sometimes-activist to a fully committed member of the resistance, she found her role in the form of feeding people. Feed the Resistance is a fantastic collection of inspirational essays and nurturing recipes by Turshen and a broad range of activists. From “Easy Meals for Folks Who Are Too Busy Resisting to Cook” to “Feeding the Masses” to “Baked Goods + Portable Snacks,” this outstanding book is perfect for those who value community, solidarity, and the power of food. All proceeds go to the ACLU. - S.B.

I’m always excited to see a new issue of Cherry Bombe, the magazine that celebrates women and food, on the stands. Cherry Bombe skillfully blends fresh faces (Molly Yeh, Jessica Koslow) with culinary royalty (Leah Chase, Martha Stewart) to provide a beautifully designed, well-written look at women in the food world. Cherry Bombe’s cool new cookbook is as hard to resist as its magazine. It showcases awesome recipes from a wide range of cooks, including San Francisco’s Elizabeth Prueitt (Tartine) and Oakland’s Tanya Holland (Brown Sugar Kitchen). - S.B.

More than 800 recipes are included in this celebration of the diversity of American food, organized state by state. Terrific contributors abound, including Jonathan Gold and Alice Waters, representing California; Edward Lee (Kentucky); Naomi Pomeroy (Oregon); and Michael Twitty (Virginia). The menus and chefs chosen to represent each state make this book endlessly interesting (and worthy of debate), and the bounty of iconic recipes—from Cobb Salad to Tortilla Soup to Cherry Pie—will make you feel grateful for the incredible range of food we call American. - S.B.
