I adore Julia Child’s Mastering the Art of French Cooking as much as anybody, but Richard Olney’s books about French food are the ones that have made the biggest impact on my cooking. Olney was an American who found his place in the world in Provence, and through his books, brought the joys of French country cooking to American readers. Simple French Food, which Alice Waters credits as being one of her greatest sources of inspiration for cooking at Chez Panisse, showcases seasonal, unpretentious food to perfection.

Few people are familiar with the life of Emma Lazarus, the poet behind the iconic lines inscribed on the Statue of Liberty: “Give me your tired, your poor/Your huddled masses…”. Glaser movingly tells Lazarus’s story, while the delicately composed and whimsical art of Claire Nivola creates an elegant and playful vision of her life. A striking biography and a beautiful picture book. Grades K–4.

A big, generous book that I turn to again and again for wonderful dessert recipes. Totally charming and user-friendly. And Sax’s “Best-Ever Pumpkin Pie”? It’s true. I’ve never made, or tasted, better.

Bechdel's illustrations and writing take us into the history of psycho analysis and back in the pursuit of solving the complicated connection she feels toward her mother, who can be in turns judgmental, praising, kind and indifferent. Bechdel's queerness is a big issue between them, as is her decision to divulge family secrets in her work.

Mr. Wuffles isn’t exactly lazy, he’s just got better things to do than play with toys. For example, stalking the little aliens who just fled their malfunctioning spaceship for the safety of the wall vent. Will they be able to get back to their ship? Only if they learn to outwit one very fixated black cat. Who else but David Wiesner could have invented such a hilarious and oddly plausible tale? A perfect cat book and another wordless masterpiece from the three-time Caldecott winner. Ages 4 & up.

Sixth-grader Ruby Pepperdine is "good at figuring out what she was supposed to do," but since her grandmother Gigi’s death, she’s lost the center of everything. The story is told in flashbacks circles around the truth. What if there is no "supposed to"? Ruby, missing Gigi, misses opportunity after opportunity to remain close to her best friend, her family, her town. This sweet novel is simultaneously commonplace and complex, poignant, and oh-so-gently funny, like life, like death—like love, which is the center of everything.

If you enjoyed If I Loved You, I Would Tell You This by Robin Black (a major Bookshop favorite), then Natalie Serber's debut collection of short stories is right up your ally. The theme here is mothers and daughters--how their bonds are formed, then broken, then clumsily mended again. These stories are nuanced, riveting, and ripe for discussion. I can't imagine a better literary poolside read!

Comic books show a world where people jump around in spandex, real heroes exist, and the next person to walk through the door might lead to an adventure. But this is the real world; heroes and superpowers and adventures aren’t actual things--right? This is a book about wanting more than ordinary, more than what’s real--wanting stories, and about being a story. It’s about love, adventure, and saving people--and also saving yourself.

I was immediately intrigued by the premise of this book, which begins with everyone’s worst nightmare: waking up in a mental institution where everyone thinks you’re someone else and you have absolutely no evidence to prove otherwise.  Once the story begins to take its course, it offers something for everyone, from lovers of historical fiction, to those who just want a great psychological thriller to sink their teeth into.

“A travel memoir by Theroux is always an event but one set in Africa, the continent where his taste for what would become his career began, when he served in the Peace Corps in 1963, is a major happening. Theroux’s prose is as vividly descriptive and atmospheric as ever and, though a bit curmudgeonly, he’s still wide open to raw, painful interactions between his psyche and his surroundings.”
