Steve Young, the star quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers in the 1990s, transports us to many seminal moments in his riveting memoir. By writing about his life, from his father’s influence on his work ethic (his father was aptly nicknamed “Grit”) to the anxieties that plagued Steve’s time on the field, to his pursuit of a law degree to quench his insatiable thirst for knowledge, Young brings us closer to understanding what drove him to the pinnacle of athletic success and into the hearts of the 49er Faithful everywhere (including mine). —Casey

Living history through another’s eyes is a long tradition in American literature, but it is often from a very white perspective. Peter Ho Davies, through his superb mastery of language, shows us what it means to be an American while also being Chinese. Davies takes four unique characters from different eras and draws readers into their story at once distinct and familiar. Over and over, I recalibrated my understanding of history and how much is owed to overlooked, but vast communities.  —Ivy

Challenging the status quo isn’t easy, and though becoming the first female deputy sheriff is hard as it gets, Constance Kopp isn’t one to back down. When a mistake threatens her new career, she throws every ounce of nerve and grit she has into fixing it—with some advice from her wonderfully eccentric sisters, of course! I loved this great historical mystery, and I’m thrilled that we’ll have Amy Stewart here to talk about it September 28th!  —Flannery

Honestly, almost any Bill Peet book could go on this list. Clever, funny, with silly rhyming words to rival Dr. Seuss, Bill Peet’s books are perfect for children. His colored pencil drawings are wonderful, and his stories have a flow and cadence that makes them perfect for reading out loud.  --Flannery

I loved this book! It was so much fun to read, and the characters were an absolute delight. The story of the first woman sheriff’s deputy, or more specifically, how she became the first female sheriff's deputy, this clever book has it all—action, eccentric characters, a vivid  historical setting, carrier pigeons, and more. This is Amy Stewart’s first work of fiction, and it’s infused with her drily witty sense of humor and warm storytelling. I adored the Kopp sisters, and sincerely hope there is a book two (and three and four...)!  —Flannery

“Eco combines his delight in suspense with astute political satire in this brainy, funny, neatly lacerating thriller…. Eco’s caustically clever, darkly hilarious, dagger-quick tale of lies, crimes, and collusions condemns the shameless corruption and greed undermining journalism and governments everywhere. A satisfyingly scathing indictment brightened by resolute love." —Booklist

“British journalist Barnett’s debut novel imagines the delicious prospect of romantic do-overs, cleverly negotiating the tricky and often dizzying terrain of three versions of first love.... Barnett’s evocative presentation is a masterly romantic study of love’s choices and  consequences, leaving wide open just what constitutes a perfect ending.” —Publishers Weekly, starred review

“In converting her lectures to this fascinating book, Herman convincingly argues that closely analyzing works of art is an empowering exercise that translates to seeing the ‘hidden’ clues in many real-life scenarios. With practice, she argues, everyone has an innate ‘visual intelligence’ waiting to be refined. Sharp and original, this book should alter how readers look at the world.” —Kirkus Reviews

“Pakistan is perhaps the world’s most dangerous country—a combustible mix of nuclear weapons, jihadis, bloody borders, and a dysfunctional state. You can only truly understand the country by going to its roots. Nisid Hajari does just that in this powerful, intelligent, and beautifully written book. Hajari presents the history like a detective story and you will be swept along. Except in this case, none of us knows how it will end.” —Fareed Zakaria
