Justina Blakeney’s colorful, comfortable, and free-spirited design style made her first book, The New Bohemians, a bestseller. Now Blakeney returns with a handbook that shows readers how to create that style for themselves. The best part about her design philosophy is that the most important elements have nothing to do with money; rather, Blakeney stresses clarity, color, plants, and natural materials to create a welcoming home that speaks to you and makes you (and your guests) happy the moment they walk in the door. I can’t get enough of her love of pattern, texture, tiles, and textiles—not to mention her joyous nature. “Home décor should be fun. If you’re not having fun, you’re doing it wrong.” - S.B.

Singer-songwriter Dar Williams tackles the sensitive issue of rampant gentrification in the United States in her new book. Using the knowledge she has acquired over her many years touring the country and her experiences in her own community, Williams offers strategies for building a happy, healthy town. She takes the reader all over the country, telling stories from cities that have made strides toward reducing gentrification and detailing the different ways that they are doing so. - Jade

I’ve only seen a glimpse of this new collection of Sedaris’s work, but it looks like we’re all in for a treat. The author’s trademark wit and dark, self-deprecating humor are paired with photos and original artwork by Sedaris himself. This big compendium gives the reader a full, three-dimensional experience and is perhaps the closest any of us will ever get to being inside David Sedaris’s head. - Jade

Most self-respecting sewers know how to laugh at themselves when a project doesn’t go as planned or doesn’t look quite as chic as they had hoped. With Pattern Behavior, you can laugh at something other than yourself between projects. A crafty version of the classic postcard, with its saucy captions it lets you see what those vintage McCall’s girls are up to when you leave them alone in your pattern drawer. - Megan

Holy heck, this book is gorgeous. Flach’s goal was to portray sameness and otherness between humans and critters, connecting us all together in an emotional burst of “Yes, we must save them because look, they are us.” And he succeeds, with breathtakingly detailed photography (let’s count hippo chin hairs, shall we?) and reminders that we are both the animals’ stewards and the ones endangering them. This lovely book is intimate and grand. - Rachel

In the way that Oliver Sacks revealed the complexity and deep heart that exists in the world of neurology, Irvin Yalom has long written books that reveal the bravery and nuances that exist within our relationships with one another (Love’s Executioner, one of Yalom’s early works, remains one of the most poignant nonfiction books I have ever read). Now in his 80s, Yalom turns toward a study of self and memory as a means of discovery. In a blend of traditional memoir and funny imaginings between his older and younger self, Yalom speaks with humor and heart about his upbringing with detached parents, his own foibles at becoming a psychiatrist, and the way that aging is an opportunity for an entirely new way of knowing and understanding the world. - S.M.C.

In the same vein as Radium Girls and Hidden Figures, Code Girls delves into the stories of the women working behind the scenes during World War II. From deciphering codes to soldering together the cipher machines themselves, these women were at the forefront of the war and its outcome but unable to tell anyone about their work. Code Girls dragged my emotions all over the place and is at the top of my all-time must-read list. - Rachel

Pete Souza (former chief official White House photographer) took more than 2 million images of President Obama during Obama’s two terms, many of which became instant classics (including “The Situation Room” as the Bin Laden raid was happening). I have always loved how Souza’s images both personalized the president and captured the respect Obama had for the office and the seriousness with which he took his job. This new collection of photographs brings tears to my eyes not only for reasons of nostalgia (and the stark difference between Obama and the current resident in the White House), but because Souza captures the humanity of a man who bore so much weight on his shoulders. From the emotional moment the Obamas visited Nelson Mandela’s cell on Robben Island to the president’s reaction to a tiny Spiderman trick-or-treating at the White House, these are images to treasure. - S.B.
