Big Magic is a sweeping manifesto heralding the power of inspiration and intuition, of creativity's force in human hearts and mind. Elizabeth Gilbert's wit and wisdom is so unpretentious, so unique to her, so relatable yet inspirational, that--in a sea of how-to and "fix your life" shticks--Big Magic is beyond refreshing. The Creative Living of which Gilbert writes isn't exclusive to professional artists--or even "artists" at all. Are you interested in becoming more receptive to the inspired, un-jaded side of yourself? Open Big Magic. Are you an artist interested in cutting out your (obnoxious, by the way) "tortured artist" act and creating your work joyfully? Open Big Magic. Gilbert is realistic about her convictions, and candid about her failings and doubts; her delightful personality shines so brightly in this marvelously meaningful book.

Part memoir, part pep talk, this is one of the most thoughtful and useful books about creativity I've ever read. Gilbert doesn't give out practical advice so much as suggest an attitude of toward one's own creative work: If you want to make things on a regular basis--novels, pretty aprons, pewter buttons--make time to make them on a regular basis.
And: Your art won't necessarily improve in proportion to the amount of misery you suffer to create it.
And: Curiosity can be more reliable than passion when it comes to finding inspiration.
With this book Gilbert has helped me reconsider the way I approach my own work, and for that I thank her

“In her latest book, Gilbert will completely change the way you think about the creative process. Whether the medium is a canvas, a pastry, a garden, or a page, everyone has a creative genius, but not everyone is brave enough to recognize it within themselves. In Big Magic, Gilbert advocates for the magical and divine creative muse that is ultimately a gift to both the creator and the audience. In doing so, she dispels the myth that an artist must suffer for his or her craft, affirms the paths of those who have already allowed their creative geniuses to have a voice within their lives, and inspires those who thought they needed to be completely free of their fear in order to begin.”
