About the Author
Thomas Hansen Hickenbottom's life is as intriguing as one of the characters in his novels. He is a fourth generation native of California's central coast. His earliest memories are of the beach, exploring sand dunes while his mother and father dug for clams in secluded coves. His first foray into wave riding came at age eight, when he waded into the shore break off Cowell's Beach in Santa Cruz. He remembers climbing on a large piece of driftwood that was floating in the surf zone, and hanging on until a wave pushed him to shore. By age ten he was body surfing and mat surfing. He borrowed balsawood boards from the older surfers, then at eleven, bought his first foam surfboard. That was right at the end of the "balsa era" in 1958. He became an early master of the sport, and during his senior year in high school, was rated number five in competitive surfing for northern California. In the spring of 1967 he was drafted into the U.S. Army, serving two tours of duty in the central highlands of Vietnam as an Army medic. He was involved in many major military campaigns, including the Tet Offensive of 1968, tending to wounded soldiers of the Fourth Infantry Division and the 173rd Airborne Division.
