Description
This book--composed of poetry, and bits of photography and prose--covers a variety of topics, all of which are tied together by and through an unexpected decision to reject a future already planned, and what might become as a result. Shakedown bears witness to the possibilities and burdens that come from having choices, and to what it means to go for broke. It recounts moments of crushing isolation and periods of saturating loss, as well as the itty bits of unexpected loveliness that find us here and there.
About the Author
Amena is a writer and student from right here, and she is going for broke in work and life. She wrote the pieces that compose Shakedown over a number of years, unaware that together they would eventually become the components of a single book. Some of the poems have undergone revision for this project, but the vast majority are in their original form. She is also the photographer of the images included in the book.
Amena works with Musafra Press because of its desire to publish books that are more highly valued for their artistic merit than their bestseller potential, and to allow writers to maintain creative control over the content of their books. Its structure also allows writers to receive a much larger portion of the profits than the percentage offered by traditional publishers. Rather than printing high quantities of a large number of titles, Musafra focus on the production of one title at a time, yielding small quantities of well-crafted work. In addition, all of its books are bound individually by hand.
