I was thrilled to see this gem of a book finally come out in paperback! Andrew Davidson’s debut novel is an oddball of a love story, featuring a badly burned ex-porn star and a mysterious sculptress who is convinced he was her lover in a past life. A vivid and enrapturing book that is guaranteed to thrill fans of Chuck Palahniuk or Katherine Dunn. -Kat

Here is a unique, tragic story of an orphaned Kurdish boy enlisted into an imperial army and forced to fight his own people. Khadivi traces the circuitous history of a nameless boy whose initiations into manhood are clouded in turmoil and tragic conflict. Khadivi’s writing lifts this tragedy to heights of poetry, reminding me of Cormac McCarthy, William Faulkner and Toni Morrison. -Vernon

I’m not usually one for mysteries, but the hype surrounding the posthumous publication of Larsson’s first book was too much to resist. I’m grateful it was, because Dragon Tattoo is a richly written tale of corporate greed, murder, and family secrets. This novel is something you’ll devour in a few lengthy sittings. -Zack

This is a novel after every dog lover's heart. Tears jumped to my eyes regularly while reading this, less because of sad content and more from the accuracy of the dog protagonist's voice. Over and over again, I'd read Enzo's thoughts and think, "Yep, that is spot on." I couldn't put down this book, and I plan to pass it on to every dog lover I know. -Kate

For readers who are new to Morrison or who love her madly, this book will captivate. The prose is dreamlike as it considers the most unfortunate parts of our history, in this case the United States' relationship to slavery in the 1600s. I always turn to Toni Morrison's work when I want writing that will leave me breathless, and remind me of those events none of us should forget; A Mercy does just that. -Kate

Both an historical and contemporary novel, this book chronicles two eastern European immigrants in Chicago – one in 1908 and the other a century later. Their intermingled stories create an excellent novel that addresses issues of immigration, social justice, anarchism, and the formation of histories and memory. This novel is one of my favorites of 2009 -Josie

I love ghost stories almost as much as I love Audrey Niffenegger, so I was thrilled to pick up her sophomore novel, a spooky tale of twins and ghosts set at the infamous Highgate cemetery in London. It is the story of Valentina and Julia Poole, twenty-year-old American twins who inherit a creepy flat in London under one condition: they must move in alone. -Kat

The Invisible Mountain caught me in its spell early on and never released me. De Robertis has a unique command of language and story (this, a tail spun and weaved through three generations of Uruguayans); a novel as engaging as it is daring, De Robertis turns her gaze on shifting identities, and political ideals, illuminating the tumultuous history of 20th-century Latin America. -Vernon

Zafon is a master of poetic writing, and in The Angel’s Game, he turns out a stunning tale of one man’s descent into madness. This is a tale of writing, books, and love, and the dangerous obsession that is the dark side of any passion. The best part is that the book provides further insight into what I consider Zafon’s greatest creation, the Cemetary of Forgotton Books. -Flannery

Darkly beautiful and highly emotionally charged, this novel is full of the kind of realism I've come to expect from O'Nan. He conveys the pain, despair, and loss experienced by his characters with incredible authenticity and sympathy leaving them seared into my brain as if their experiences were my own. -Nici

McKinty still remains at the top of my list of writers new to me for this past year. Fifty Grand, as a stand alone, is the perfect book by which to become acquainted with him. A Cuban cop heads north on a quest for vengeance, giving McKinty a chance to show off his many gifts—terse writing that occasionally bursts into lyricism, dry wit and dead on sociological observation. -Seana

Robert Wilson’s new book may be about an apocalyptic future but it calls to mind something out of 19th century American literature. It’s an excellent work of conjecture filled with real and sympathetic characters off on epic adventures. I found it to be thought-provoking, entertaining, and highly satisfying. – Nici

City of Thieves is the kind of book you will not be able to shut up about. I had this book recommended to me by at least four people, and by the time I finished it I had recommended it to four more. It’s a daring, frantic book about two young men struggling to survive in Leningrad, Russia, a city under siege during World War II. - Kat

This is one of my favorite top three books EVER! You don’t have to be a dog person to enjoy it, but you may be one by the end. It was hard to put down, but as I grew closer to the end, I had to read slower and slower. I didn’t want it to ever end. Beautifully written, with a page-turning plot, this is a mesmerizing read: one you will remember for a long time. -Clytia

Fans of the spectacular graphic novel series Fables might be a bit confused by the lack of pictures in this novel (though it does feature some lovely images), but fear not--lush story spans several centuries and features the same cast of quirky folk-and-fairy-tale characters you’ve come to love and hate in comic form. –Kat

My reasons for loving this novel are simple: it’s fast, funny and insightful. While I sometimes bite into a big chunk of serious fiction, there is nothing better than a lighthearted book with substance and wit. Juliet, Naked is full of both, making it not only one of my favorite novels of the year, but of Hornby’s career as well. -Zack

Ishiguro is typically associated with novels, so it was something of a surprise to encounter his collection of short stories this fall. Long-time fans will not be disappointed, however, as Ishiguro’s trademark delicate style remains intact throughout the book. I was particularly surprised by the humor that suffuses these stories, all of which revolve around musicians and songwriters. –Kat

In ten or twenty years, you can be sure that 2666 will have taken its rightful place as a modern masterpiece alongside novels like Middlesex and 100 Years of Solitude. This work is actually five books, telling the sprawling, dark story of a fictionalized Juarez, Mexico. Bolano’s death was a great loss to the literary world, and 2666 is a testament to his legacy and talent. -Zack

King got the idea for Under the Dome in 1976, and, daunted, decided to take a break. Now, finally, the book is out, and well worth the wait. Under the Dome is a story of good and evil as only Stephen King can tell it. Completely captivating, totally addicting, this book is a ton of fun that makes you sit back and ponder what you just read…when you can put it down. -Flannery
