Print on Demand with the Espresso Book Machine
Bookshop Santa Cruz’s patrons will now have access to eight million titles in any language with the Espresso Book Machine, the only digital-to-print retail solution on the market. Watch as the book you order is printed, bound and trimmed into a paperback book in mere minutes.
The EBM technology draws books from two sources--in-copyright titles made available by major publishers including HarperCollins, Simon & Schuster, McGraw-Hill, Hachette, Macmillan, and O’Reilly--and titles that have fallen into the public domain and are made available as scans through the Google Books program. If Bookshop Santa Cruz does not have a particular title on-hand, the store may be able to print a book on the spot instead of having it ordered. Now it is easier than ever before to obtain hard-to-find books at Bookshop.
Some authors of note whose in-print books are available through the EBM:
- Poet Laureates Joseph Brodsky, Donald Hall, Philip Levine
- Pulitzer Prize-winning authors Gary Wills, David Remnick, Richard Rhodes
- Nobel Prize winning novelists Mario Vargas Llosa, Seamus Heaney, Derek Walcott, Wole Soyinka, William Golding, Elias Canetti, Czeslaw Milosz, Isaac Bashevis Singer
Interesting older titles:
Alice’s Adventures Under Ground — the original manuscript on which the classic story was based, handwritten by Lewis Caroll as a Christmas gift for the real Alice.
The Bay Psalm Book — the first book (that is still in existence) printed in British North America in 1640.
Proust in the original French!
Most of the EBM’s Public Domain content comes from the Google Books database. In addition, we can also print titles from the Internet Archive, Gallica, and Project Gutenberg. If you are interested in a particular title from any of these databases, email us at EBM@bookshopsantacruz.com or call 831-460-3258 to learn about price and availability.
