Flora & Ulysses: The Illuminated Adventures
written by Kate DiCamillo
For such a slim book, Flora & Ulysses is enormously enjoyable. I won’t outline the plot, but I will tell you it’s about the pleasure of reading aloud and sharing references (both Flora and her father will sometimes exclaim "Holy Bagumba!"); a superhero squirrel who writes poetry; a couple of quick-witted 10- and 11-year-olds (one boy, one girl), and other adults who mean well, but not always and not all of them. I smiled as I read the first page and continued to smile all the way through, except when I occasionally stopped smiling to laugh. For all ages, but particularly for 7- to 11-year-olds, this book would be an absolutely super read-aloud. --Ga

Locomotive illustrated and written by Brian Floca
For sheer majesty and the epic proportions of the locomotive, you can’t do better than this incredible knockout of a picture book. Talented writer/illustrator Brian Floca surprises us with stunning shots from unexpected angles: deep into a mountain tunnel, sideways down the tracks, inside the caboose with the engineer, or capturing panoramic vistas of a solitary train snaking through the plains. A chronicle of one family’s journey from Omaha to Sacramento in 1869, Locomotive sagely explains the inner workings of the Transcontinental Railroad in lush and fascinating detail. This is the train book you’ve been waiting for. Ages 4–10. --Tera
